The Ricoh KR5 is a standard 35 millimeter (mm) film camera. It was manufactured in the late 1970s. That so many people still use them is a testament to the camera's quality and durability.

The KR5 is considered by many to be a great starter camera for novices. The only electronic component on it is the exposure meter, users have to learn to manually set everything else. Once a photographer knows how to do this, it makes using other cameras easier.

The KR-5 features manual exposure control and shutter speeds from 1 second to 1/2000 of a second, manual advance and rewinding. It also has a metal chassis for the lens mount which makes it easier to change lenses.

Ricoh later upgraded the KR-5 with the Ricoh KR-5 Super and the Ricoh KR-5 Super II. These cameras have slightly different features than the original KR-5. Over time, as they progressed toward digital cameras, Ricoh's cameras became smaller, lighter and more features were automated.
