Vegetables

Deer do not like certain vegetables and will not eat them. Lavender is one. The leaves of this perennial are used for salads and in jellies. Deer also tend to stay away from chives, though they might sometimes nibble. In general, they don't like plants that have strong fragrances.
Barrier Plants

You can also protect your vulnerable vegetables by planting them behind deer-repellent plants. Deer do not like plants with fuzzy leaves, and so they tend to stay away from lamb's ear. Bluestar is a short shrub that deer avoid, which puts out blue flowers. They also avoid fragrant herbs such as sage and mint.
