Plexi Glass Vs. Glass Window

Plexi Glass Vs. Glass Window thumbnail
Windows can be made from transparent acrylic sheets.

Plexiglas is a trade name for polymethyl methacrylate (also known simply as acrylic or PMMA). It has fallen into use as a term for clear acrylic materials in general.

It is sometimes useful to make windows from acrylic instead of glass. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Features

    • Window glass is a noncrystalline solid made from mineral ingredients. It's strong, weatherproof and transparent. You can also make windows using sheets of clear acrylic. In some cases, a window made from acrylic may be superior to one made from glass.

    Misconceptions

    • Acrylic sheet is sometimes seen as a cheap and inferior alternative to real glass. In fact, acrylic can be produced with many properties as good as or superior to those of glass; such a material would generally cost more than the equivalent glass version.

    Considerations

    • In general, window glass is a better choice than acrylic as it performs well and is relatively inexpensive. Where a window needs to be especially lightweight, however, acrylic is the better choice. If you wish to have windows that are shaped rather than flat, acrylic may also be preferable is it is easier to shape. Acrylic scratches more easily than glass, but scratches easily buff out. Acrylic is also shatterproof and has greater tensile strength than glass.
