Shared Storage on an External Hard Drive
Windows lets you share drives, including an external hard drive. An external drive is beneficial for backing up or transporting large amounts of data. These devices are shared in the same way you share a hard drive in Windows.

Function

The function of a shared external drive is to allow other users to store data on the device from their computers. To share an external drive, plug it in to one of your computers and right-click the device in the "Computer" utility in Windows. Select "Properties." Click the "Sharing" tab and type a name for the shared resource.
Identification

Client computers on the network map a drive letter to the shared device. This is accomplished by clicking the "Network" icon on the left panel in the "Computer" utility. Double-click the computer name that has the shared drive and you can see the shared drive.

The benefits of sharing the drive is that any computer on the network at any time can create a backup. It is beneficial for important documents and programs and it is an affordable form of network backup.
