Types of Fur
Cost and Care
-
Fur coats are not inexpensive. The type of fur, pelt and length desired, as well as the vendor from which you purchase your coat are all weighty factors. A fur jacket can cost from $800 to $1,800 and a coat can cost from $1,800 to $4,800 (as of 2010). Maintenance is another cost to consider, as your fur coat must be stored in a cool place during the summer months and properly cleaned. This too can be expensive.

Fur Protestors
-
If you are considering purchasing a fur coat, it is important to research the animal rights policies of your state. Organizations such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) often protest against the killing of animals for their fur.
Buying Tips
-
According to the Fur Information Council of America (FICA), when purchasing a fur coat, there are a few tips to consider. "The pelt should be lustrous, supple and well-matched," advises FICA. FICA also suggests feeling the fur for its density and glossy guard hairs, which should be soft and not bristly. The seams should also be tightly sewn with straight falling hems. And of course, make sure you try on the coat to confirm that the weight is not too heavy for your body size.
