What Is a Breather Valve?

Breather valves are used on shipping containers to reduce the impact of moisture, humidity and interior pressure changes caused by the movement of the containers at high altitudes.

Process

Breather valves adjust the pressure and vacuum within a sealed container automatically to a set level on the valve. Breather valves also control the temperature and humidity within the container over a specified number of airlifts or changes in altitude.

Uses

A breather valve is used to protect goods (including engines and electronics) that could be damaged or destroyed during the movement of a shipping container. Breather valves are used in place of heavy, costly materials that would make the construction and movement of the containers more expensive.

Transport

Breather valves are used to regulate the moisture content of shipping containers transported by air, road and rail. Problems with too much moisture entering the spring-based breather valve mechanism can only be caused by extreme circumstances, such as submerging the container, according to AGM.
