Vehicle Theft Recovery

It takes more than good luck to recover a stolen vehicle.

Nothing ruins an otherwise fine day like realizing your vehicle has been stolen. Vehicle owners should avoid leaving valuable items exposed in a vehicle, such as laptops or cellphones, as this may increase the odds of thieves breaking in.

  1. Protection

    • Having a car alarm system may not always be enough to deter a thief from stealing a vehicle. A GPS tracking system can add extra protection. GPS tracking systems allow police officials and vehicle owners to track the placement of any stolen vehicle. The quicker a stolen vehicle can be located, the less time a thief has to strip it.

    • In the event that a vehicle is stolen, the owner should contact the police department as soon as possible and file a stolen vehicle report. This will allow the vehicle owner's insurance company to file a claim. Those who have a financed or leased vehicle should report the vehicle theft to their leasing or financing company. Filing a claim with the insurance company will protect the owner if the vehicle is used to harm another person or to destroy property.

    Warning

    • If the police recover a vehicle, the owner may reclaim it by showing proof of ownership and identity; however, if the police department locates a stolen car but cannot locate the owner, the department has the right to sell the car. Always keep the police up to date if you change your address or telephone number.
