Gel Vs. AGM Batteries

Gel and AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries are different types of lead-acid batteries. In gel batteries, the addition of silica turns the liquid electrolyte into a gel. In AGM batteries, a boron-silicate glass fiber mat holds the electrolyte.

  1. Gel Batteries

    • Gel batteries are more sensitive to heat. Overcharging or fast charging can damage them, and they are not as durable as AGM cells. Also, the electrolyte will eventually evaporate.

    AGM Batteries

    • AGM batteries are resistant to temperature extremes and can withstand some overcharging. AGMs also lose very little fluid by evaporation, hold charge well and are commonly used in back-up systems and solar cell systems.

    Additional Facts

    • Both gel and AGM batteries are longer-lived and safer to handle than traditional flooded lead-acid batteries but are more expensive. AGMs are the most versatile and can be used in more applications.
