New York State Real Estate Appraiser Training

New York State requires real estate appraiser trainees to complete a qualified real estate appraiser assistant license course consisting of 150 class hours, including 15 hours of uniform standards of professional appraiser practice and working under the supervision of a New York-certified or licensed real property appraiser (as of 2010).

  1. Training Experience

    • The trainee is only allowed to practice appraisal work their supervisor is licensed to appraise in New York. Work performed by the trainee must be documented in the trainee assignment log and signed by the supervisor to qualify for experience points toward a New York State certified residential real estate appraiser or a New York State certified general real estate appraiser license issued by the New York Department of State Licensing Services Bureau.

    Certified Residential License

    • The New York certified residential real estate appraiser license requires completion of 2,500 hours appraisal work experience, 200 class hours, an associate's degree or 21 college semester hours, and you must pass the New York State exam.

    Certified General License

    • The New York certified general real estate appraiser license requires 3,000 appraisal work experience hours, 300 class hours, a bachelor's degree or 30 college semester hours, and you must pass the New York State exam.

    Curriculum and Costs

    • The course curriculum consists of basic appraisal principles and procedures, market analysis, highest and best use, site valuation, cost, sales comparison and income approach, writing reports, fair housing and fair lending, environmental, USPAP ethics and standards and statistics, modeling and finance. Course costs range between $295 and $795 per class (as of 2010). Discount packages are available.
