EPA Stack Testing

A stack is a metal chimney-like structure used by manufacturing facilities to ventilate polluted air. A stack test is conducted in order to measure and monitor the quantity of pollutants emitted through stacks typically found in manufacturing environments. Emission rates are regulated in the United Sates by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Phases

A stack test is typically performed by a consultant who shares testing procedures and results with EPA officials. The test is conducted in three validated steps to ensure the integrity of the process. The steps include a procedural review, observation, and submission of a final review.

Rationale

Stack tests are conducted and monitored to prevent excessive air pollution and to ensure that companies comply with the the health and safety regulations related to the Clean Air Act. The EPA conducts regular unannounced inspections to verify emission standards.

Enforcement

Companies found to be in violation of EPA guidelines are subject to a variety of enforcement actions. Depending upon severity, penalties may range from an EPA order of corrective action to monetary fines.
