Magnolia trees are known for their beauty.

Magnolia trees are a popular choice for homeowners because they are easy to grow and are usually free of pests. They range from bushes to very large trees and can be either evergreen or deciduous. The largest magnolia trees can live more than 100 years. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Types

    • One of the most well-known magnolias is the southern magnolia tree, which can grow as large as 40 feet wide. A smaller variety is sweet bay. Other varieties include the umbrella magnolia and the cucumber tree. Smaller trees have a lifespan of 40 to 80 years.

    Growth

    • The growth of a magnolia tree can be very slow. According to the National Gardening Association, magnolia trees often take a long time to bloom. Some magnolias bloom within two or three years of being planted, but others can take as long as 15 years to bloom.

    Considerations

    • The lifespan of a magnolia can be shortened by droughts or fires. When planting a magnolia tree, select a permanent site because magnolia trees don't like to be transplanted. Magnolias don't do well when they are crowded and may be damaged by digging around roots, according to the Southern Living website.
