How to Shop for Tires by Rim Size
If your car needs tires, it is easy enough to read the sidewalls and purchase the proper size. If you install new rims, however, finding the right tires to fit can be a bit more tricky.

Finding the Tire Size that Fits
-
Tires are measured by straightforward means and the number written on every sidewall is a breakdown of these measurements. LT 205/50/15, for instance, is a very common size. This breaks down to LT for light truck, 205 for the width of the tire in millimeters, 50 for the height of the sidewall in comparison to the tire width (50 = 50% of the width), and 15 for the size of the rim (15 inches in this case).
Measuring the Rim
-
Using a standard tape measure, find the size of your rim by measuring the height and the width from edge to edge. Once you have obtained these measurements, purchasing tires will be a simple task of converting your numbers into the proper size. Either ask your local tire shop for the proper size tire or utilize a rim size/tire size calculator to find it yourself.

Types of Tire to Consider
-
There are many types of tire that will fit each size rim and customizing can be a big part of tire shopping. Sidewall height tends to be the main variable. Low profile tires are often used for looks and cornering performance, while higher profile tires are more common on off-road and cruising vehicles. Remember to check the clearance within wheel wells, especially when turning, to determine if the customized tire you prefer truly fits your car.
