When to Prune & Collect Azalea Cuttings
Azalea trees require moderate yearly pruning to ensure good health. Pruning time frame is important, especially if you are collecting the cuttings for transplantation. If dipped in a hormone rooting agent and replanted, collected cuttings will sprout new azaleas during the right season. Does this Spark an idea?

Yearly Pruning
-
Even though some azaleas are evergreen, the growth rate of all azalea plants slows during wintertime. It's best to cut in early spring, just before new growth begins. This allows you to survey and remove winter damage while the plant is still relatively dormant.
Transplanting
-
Collecting and replanting azalea cuttings is best suited for early spring. If you cut just after the winter thaw, your new azalea will have the entire growing season to root and sprout buds.

Ongoing Pruning
-
Azaleas require occasional cutting to remove dead branches and cut off suckers. Suckers are small root offshoots that reach the surface. These roots will compete with the main plant for resources. Deadheading is not necessary for azaleas.
