1982 Camaro Z28 Performance Output

When Chevrolet introduced an all-new Camaro sports coupe for 1982, the redesigned car won raves for its handling. However, in light of the oil shocks of the 1970s, base-model Camaros emphasized fuel economy over acceleration. For true performance, Camaro buyers had to step up to V-8 models like the Z28.

  1. LG4 Engine Specs

    • The LG4 delivered 145 hp from 305 cubic inches. Torque measured 240 ft.-lbs. at 2,000 rpm. This powerplant featured a four-barrel Quadrajet carburetor and an 8.6:1 compression ratio. This engine also served as an option in the Camaro's Berlinetta and Sport Coupe trim levels.

    LU5 Engine Specs

    • Chevrolet reserved the optional LU5 engine exclusively for the Z28. Essentially the same basic engine as the LG4, the LU5 added a throttle-body fuel injection system known as Cross Fire Injection to boost output to 165 hp. Torque remained 240 ft.-lbs., although it now peaked at 2,400 rpm. Z28s equipped with the LU5 engine sported functional air induction vents on the hood.

    Performance

    • Motor Trend clocked a pre-production model with the LU5 engine at a 0-to-60-mph time of 9.4 seconds. Skid pad grip measured a then-impressive 0.83g. Car and Driver measured a 0-to-60 time of 7.9 seconds and a quarter mile of 16.0 seconds at 85.0 mph.
