Factory Specs for the 1969 L35 396CI 325 Horse Engine

General Motors first produced the L35 396 cubic inch (CI) in 1965, and used it to power the Chevelle Super Sport and the Corvette. The L35, also referred to as the Mark IV, went on to serve as the platform on which Chevy built the 427 CI and 454 CI engines.

  1. Performance Specifications

    • The L35 generated 325 horsepower at 4,800 revolutions per minute (RPM), and 410 foot-pounds of force at 3,200 revolutions per minute (torque). Its pistons removed 396 CI of air and fuel from its combustion chamber during an engine cycle (displacement). The L35 had a compression ratio of 10.25 to one (maximum engine volume compared to minimum), and used a four-barrel carburetor.

    Bore and Stroke

    • The motor had a cylinder diameter of 4.094 inches (bore) and its pistons moved 3.76 inches between bottom dead center and top dead center (stroke).

    Other Specifications

    • The L35 had an ignition timing advance of four degrees before top dead center and a cylinder firing order of 1, 8, 4, 3, 5, 6, 7, 2. The spark plug gap, where the engine's voltage causes gases to interact and initiate a combustion cycle, measured .035 inches, and its ignition timing point gap (the duration, measured in degrees, that an ignition system's primary circuit stays closed to energize the ignition coil) measured .019 degrees.
