Kindle Facts

Kindles are eBook readers from Amazon, an online retailer. Books for the Kindle can be purchased from the "Kindle Store" and are available for reading within 60 seconds. Over 400,000 titles are available as of December 2010, along with daily newspapers, blogs and Wikipedia.

    • The original Kindle was launched in November 2007. Its successor, the Kindle 2, came out in February 2009. Amazon released the third Kindle device in July 2010.

    Features

    • Two models of the Kindle 3 are available in 2010: one with 3G access, and one without it. Both are physically the same device. Kindle 3s weigh 10.2 oz. and measure 8 inches long by 5.3 inches wide by 0.8 inches high. They have 4 GB of memory (which holds up to 1500 books) and a text-to-speech feature that can read the books out loud.

    Availability and cost

    • Kindles are available from Amazon and other websites, technology stores and bookshops. Prices for the Kindle 3 vary, but the 3G Kindle generally costs more than the non-3G device.
