What Is Computer Image Management?

What Is Computer Image Management? thumbnail
Computer image management systems are widely used in hospitals.

Computer image management is an information system designed to store, retrieve and distribute image-based files over a network or information system. The software that integrates with the hardware interface (scanners or digital cameras) of the system is designed to catalog and index images that can be accessed over a server-based network.

  1. Features

    • A computer imaging system is a specialized workstation designed to capture and store digital images into an information system for distribution to other workstations or data banks. Most computer workstations are integrated into high-resolution cameras. Most hospitals integrate X-ray technology with computer workstations to pass along image results to different departments.

    Size

    • A computer image system is usually housed by a mid-range or large server. Because images are larger than regular image files, storage in the terabyte range for an image management system is not uncommon. The system also contains several processors, extra memory and large back-up hard drive systems on one machine. These systems are distributed processing systems, which means that images and other applications are distributed to other workstations in a timely manner.

    Types

    • Imaging systems can be found in various business industries. For example, a records archival business uses imaging to save money by reducing paperwork. Images of forms are photographed to server systems for further retrieval. Hospitals use these systems to manage information pertaining to procedures such as X-ray management, CAT scan and MRI information.
