Can I Crown a Mobile Tooth?

A mobile tooth can result from a number of factors. Gum disease or an untreated infection at the base of the root can cause the tooth to become mobile. A tooth can also become mobile as a result of trauma caused by accidents, falls, fights or sports activities. Whether a crown can be put on a mobile tooth depends on the extent and cause of mobility.

Crown

A crown is a cover or cap that is placed over a damaged or decayed tooth to improve its appearance or restore shape and size after the tooth has been treated. They are also used to cover misshapen or discolored teeth, cover an implant or hold a bridge in place.

Dental Splinting

In cases where the tooth becomes mobile due to external trauma, the loose tooth can be strengthened by using a dental splint before a crown in placed. Splinting involves supporting the tooth in its position by binding the affected tooth to the surrounding teeth.

Considerations

Crowns should not be put on teeth affected by periodontal disease or infection to the point where they become useless and will eventually fall out.
