The Definition of a Dry Martini
A martini can be prepared and served "up" -- with no ice and in a stemmed martini glass -- or on the rocks, on ice in a rock glass. Martinis are traditionally made with gin, but vodka can be used. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Martini Recipe
-
Many people order a "dry" martini. What makes a martini "dry" is that a lesser amount of dry vermouth is used than would be for a regular martini. A dry martini recipe includes 1 2/3 oz. of gin or vodka, 2/3 oz. of dry vermouth and one or two olives. The liquids are shaken well and poured into a stemmed martini glass or over ice in a rock glass, and olives are added.
Vermouth Elements
-
The added vermouth is a dry aperitif wine infused with aromatic herbs and spices and is usually imported from France. It is 15 to 18 percent alcohol.

Condiments
-
Green olives are traditionally served with martinis. Dry martinis are traditionally served with stuffed green olives, but other alternatives are lime, a lemon twist or specialty olives such as jalapeno-stuffed olives.
