Characteristics
-
When used in tiles for interior areas, carrara marble is probably the first choice of those who want to give their home or office an artistic look. In addition, it can be polished to a smooth, shining surface.
Cost
-
The durability and look of carrara marble comes with a price. A square foot of carrara marble tile can cost $7.99 and up (as of 2010), depending on quality.
-
Drawbacks
-
Although carrara marble is quite durable, it does require special care when used for counter tops. Since marble is formed from calcium carbonate, exposure to acids -- even weak ones from foods -- can mar its surface. Wiping up all spills immediately while avoiding the placement of hot cookware, trivets and mats on its surface will prolong its gloss.
