Cremation & Pennsylvania Law

Cremation & Pennsylvania Law thumbnail
Pennsylvania allows cemeteries to determine cremation burials.

Pennsylvania does not involve itself in matters pertaining to cremation burials. Each cemetery maintains their own cremation guidelines and should be addressed individually regarding desires and needs. There are a few standards, however, common to all cemeteries.

  1. Casket

    • To be cremated in Pennsylvania, it is not necessary to purchase a casket. It is required, however, that a cremation container be purchased and utilized.

    Burial

    • Ashes can, typically, be scattered in the cemetery, buried, held in an urn or scattered on an individual's private property. Whichever final resting place you choose, make certain your will documents how you wish to be laid to rest with accuracy.

    Vault

    • Some cemeteries require a vault for an urn to be placed in if you are burying ashes. It is important the cemetery be consulted prior to making arrangements for your final resting place.
