Can a Text Message Lock a Cell Phone? thumbnail
Phones with the software or feature can be locked via SMS from a computer.

Sometimes you might want to keep your phone data safe without entering a password every time you use it. You can still lock most phones if it become necessary. You can lock your phone remotely via a text message, or SMS, if you lose it. Some phones have this options, others can get it and some never can.

  1. Enable, if Possible

    • To check whether your phone allows remote locking via SMS without downloading extra software, select "Settings" from under the "Menu." Choose "Security" and look for a remote locking option. In Nokia phones, this is under "Phone and SIM" after choosing the security option; you can enable remote locking here if your phone has the option.

    Applications

    • Many phones do not offer an option that allows you to lock your phone via SMS. In this case, you might be able to download a mobile application from your phone's "Application Marketplace." You can locate an app by searching the marketplace or checking your phone provider's website.

    Other Phones

    • If your phone doesn't originally possess remote locking software and you can't find an application that will do the job, you will not be able to lock your phone remotely. The best you can do is to monitor the data on your phone, keep it locked with a password or buy a new phone with this capability if it is necessary.
