Standard Recording Release Agreement
A standard recording release agreement outlines requirements for promotional and commercial use of copyrighted materials. A recording company, educational institution or non-governmental entity sponsors the agreement and the user who wishes to broadcast or distribute musical recordings agrees in writing to certain conditions.

Users who broadcast or sell copyrighted musical recordings on CD, film or music video must follow U.S. and international copyright protection provisions. Recording release agreements require users to follow governing law, policy and guidelines stipulated within the U.S. Copyright Law Act, the Berne Convention and the Universal Copyright Convention.

Users must obtain mechanical or synchronized licenses to release composition arrangements that fall under copyright protection. Recording release agreements require users to seek permission from the original composer or lyricist in writing even if the composition arrangement is unpublished. Users must also obtain performance licenses from granting organizations such as ASCAP, The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Standard recording release agreements prohibit the use of the company name on any part of media in book or electronic form to include the front and back cover and discs. Users of copyrighted composition arrangements cannot use the logo or any other likeness of the sponsoring entity and display materials on a website. They must obtain permission in writing and receive authorization.
