Monograms use an initial letter to represent a name.

Monograms use initial letters to represent a name. The most common configuration is to have three letters, but there are variations for using one or two letters. Every family member usually has his own monogram, but if you're part of a couple, you may choose to combine your names to create a shared monogram. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. One Letter

    • One-letter monograms are usually the first letter in the family surname. You may also choose to use the initial letter of your first name.

    Two Letters

    • You would use the initial letters in the first and last name for a two-letter monogram. Couples may use the two-letter monogram to unite the initial letters of both their first names.

    Three Letters

    • Three-letter monograms often have a larger letter in the center. This larger, center letter is usually the family surname. The initial letter for the first name goes before the center letter and the initial for the middle name appears after.

A couple may choose to place the initial letters for both first names on either side of the center, larger letter, which represents the surname.

Three-letter monograms can also be done by putting the initials for the first, middle and last names in that order. In this case, all letters would be the same size.
