The tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding method uses a tungsten electrode to supply an electric arc for welding. Due to the dangers of strong infrared and ultraviolet rays, fire hazards and electric shock, all persons operating TIG welding equipment should familiarize themselves with the recommended safety measures.

  1. Gear

    • Individuals operating TIG welders should wear appropriate fire protective clothing and gear. Inverted protective goggles with side shields, helmets with attached face shields and filter lenses are mandatory. Dress in clothing made of heavy cotton or wool, as these materials are harder to ignite than lighter fabrics. Wear shirts without pockets, button up shirt collars and do not cuff trousers. Protect hands with flame-resistant, gauntlet type gloves.

    Area

    • Implement flame resistant shields or screens and weld in an adequately ventilated area. Place fire extinguishers in accessible locations on-site. Post warning signs in designated welding areas. Protective eyewear is to be worn by all persons in close proximity to the welding operation.

    Equipment

    • Routinely check electrical connections on power sources, wire feeders, gun and liner assembly, electrode holders, cables, connectors, terminals and electrical safety devices. Be aware of electrical shock hazards with poor connections, bare spots on cables and working in wet environments. Regularly examine hoses for wear, loose connections and leaks. Repair hoses by removing the damaged spot and splicing. Never use tape to fix a broken hose.
