Portable CD Player Disc Errors

CD errors are usually easily corrected.

Regardless of brand of portable CD player, all errors are caused by the same basic problems. Usually the problem lies with the CD itself, the mechanics of the player or environmental issues.

Disc Problems

If a CD is scratched, dented, chipped or cracked, it probably will not play. Try cleaning it with a damp cloth or use a CD buffering system to remove scratches. Cracked or chipped CDs cannot usually be repaired and will need to be replaced.

Mechanical Problems

If the CD is not popped firmly into place, an error will occur. CDs usually snap in with an audible click. If the laser mechanism is dirty or there is dust on the inside of the player, it will need to be cleaned to work properly. Any other mechanical defects, such as the laser not reading or the power supply not working, are best fixed by a professional.

Environmental Problems

Portable CD players are very susceptible to environmental factors. Oftentimes, humidity can cause disc reading errors. Until the player dries out, it may not work properly. Exposure to direct moisture also has this effect. If the player itself is not level or is being moved, it can become unable to play. This happens in bumpy cars or during jogging. More expensive players are less likely to skip.
