Scanner to Text Software

Scanner to text software takes documents scanned into a PC and converts them into plain, editable text which can be loaded into a word processor. The technique is known as Optical Character Recognition or OCR.

  1. How it Works

    • The digital images imported by the scanner are split up into rows and columns, and then into individual letters. Each letter is analyzed and compared against a database of samples in order to convert it correctly. Advanced layouts and more ornate fonts are more difficult to convert.

    Bundled Software

    • Many scanners will come with a bundled software suite that includes some form of OCR application. If available, this is usually the best program to use, as it has been designed to operate with the specific hardware device in question.

    Third-Party Software

    • A broad range of free and paid-for programs can be used for OCR translation -- a quick Web search will turn up many matches. Compare user reviews and professional opinions as well as sample results before deciding which package to install.
