When to Overseed Fescue Grass
Fescue is one of the most common grasses planted in lawns, and it is useful in all but the southernmost parts of the United States. Fescue can be planted or overseeded during two seasons, spring and fall. Does this Spark an idea?

Fescue
-
Two major fescue types are used on lawns -- fine fescue and tall fescue. Fescue is a cool-season grass, and can be used in areas that warm-season grasses cannot tolerate. Fescue can also be used to overseed in transitional regions where warm-season grasses are green in summer but turn brown in the cold months.
Fall Overseeding
-
Fall overseeding of fescue can be applied if your lawn is made primarily of warm-season grasses that lose their color in fall and winter. Spread fescue seeds over the lawn in late August and early September for a green autumn lawn.
-
Spring Overseeding
-
In colder parts of the country, winter can often lift, revealing brown and unhealthy patches of lawn in spring. If this is the case, overseeding with fescue can help minimize or remove these patches. Early spring -- March or April, depending on where you live -- is the best time for spring overseeding.
