What Is an Electronic Crossover?

Electronic crossovers are used in car audio systems.

An electronic crossover, also referred to as an active crossover, is a filter for car audio systems. It filters and directs frequencies so only certain ranges of frequencies reach the amplifier and speakers.

Car Audio Systems

All car audio systems need some sort of passive crossover to sort through frequencies and block those outside the desired range. A typical, in-dash car radio with four speakers normally comes equipped with a passive crossover network built into the speakers.

Multiple Amps

When extra amplifiers are added to car stereo systems or sound is being directed toward specific speakers (like bass to a subwoofer), a more sophisticated model of active, or electronic, crossover is needed to sort and stream the sound.

Advantages/Disadvantages

Electronic crossovers are often adjustable and have extra features such as bass boosting. Electronic crossovers allow users to control the volume of individual speakers as opposed to just the overall stereo volume. They are generally more expensive and harder to install than passive crossovers.
