Rubber Vs. Pneumatic Wheels

Rubber Vs. Pneumatic Wheels thumbnail
Wheel choices for wheelchairs vary.

Wheels have been made with various materials and designs over the years, including pneumatic and rubber types. Both have advantages and disadvantages, depending on how they are used.

  1. Function

    • Both types of wheels can be attached to various items, such as wheelchairs. Pneumatic wheels, such as bicycle tires, are filled with air until the proper firmness is achieved. Alternately, rubber -- or puncture-proof -- wheels are filled with rubber or other fillers, such as plastic.

    Pneumatic Wheels

    • Pneumatic wheels provide better traction, encounter bumps better and carry less weight than rubber wheels. However, pneumatic wheels may go flat if punctured.

    Rubber Wheels

    • Rubber wheels cannot go flat, so they are more durable, but they are heavier than pneumatic wheels, and do not grip the ground as well.
