Vinyl to MP3 Conversion

Vinyl to MP3 conversion is the process of converting analog vinyl record recording to a digital MP3 format. This process can be done by connecting a record player to a computer using an in-line connector on the sound card or by purchasing a USB-ready record player.

  1. Line-in Sound Card

    • Many add-on sound cards allow a user to connect audio devices such as tape players, record players or CD players using a line-in connector. Users can take a traditional headphone jack cable running from the record player and connect the cable to the sound card in the line-in slot. From there, users can record songs from the record player in a digital MP3 file format using MP3 encoder software such as Cool Edit Pro 2.0 or Sound Forge.

    Stereo Amplifier

    • If you are unable to connect the record player directly to a computer's sound card, another option is to user a stereo amplifier as a way to sync the record player and the computer together. Using an output connector on the back of the stereo amplifier, the user can connect the amplifier to the computer using a standard RCA cable and an RCA to headphones jack to plug the cable into the line-in input on the sound card.

    USB Record Player

    • A number of USB-ready record players have made it onto the market in recent years and makes it simple to convert analog vinyl records to a digital format. These record players include a USB output and cable for plugging record player directly into an open USB port on the computer. Software that accompanies the USB-ready record player can then be used to record and convert vinyl records to MP3 files.
