Information on Moss Ferns

Moss fern is known scientifically as Selaginella pallescens and, despite the name, is not a moss or a fern. Unlike moss and ferns, moss fern throws out both male and female spores. They are a handy addition to the garden. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Appearance

    • Moss fern puts out tall frond-like branching systems that grow to be between 1 and 2 feet tall at maturity. These medium-green fronds have a 2-foot spread and they are an excellent ground cover. When planted in the background, they highlight small ferns well.

    Geography

    • Moss fern grows naturally from Mexico south to Columbia and Venezuela. In the U.S., it does well in USDA hardiness zones 7 and up.

    Care

    • Plant moss ferns in a well-drained, fertile soil in full to partial shade. They prefer humid conditions and they thrive when they have plenty of moisture. Apply a well-balanced fertilizer every week during the growing season.
