An electric bug zapper lures insects by an ultraviolet light, encompassed by an electrical matrix that subsequently sears the insect to death. This light attracts many different insects, including those that bite humans.
Types

All bug zappers have the same basic ultraviolet light design, but the body of the device can vary in shape, from decorative lantern shapes to a basic square shape. Some bug zappers come in the shape of a tennis racket or even a mop handle, but all function with the same zapping mechanism.

Considerations

The majority of bug zappers run on electricity, but some can be solar powered, soaking up the sun's rays during the day to power the electrical zapping matrix during the evening and night.
