The Penalties for Not Renewing a Green Card Issued Prior to 1990
Green cards are another name for permanent resident cards, which allow the bearer to legally live and work in the United States without being a naturalized citizen.

Length
-
The United States grants two types of green cards or permanent resident cards. Most are valid for 10 years. Conditional permanent resident cards -- the types which are granted based on marriage or work -- are valid for two years.
No Expiration
-
Many older forms of green cards -- such as those issued before 1990 -- do not have an expiration date on them. These cards are no longer valid and if you do not renew or replace them, you risk losing your permanent resident status.

Penalties
-
If you do not renew your expired green card, you may lose your legal, permanent residence in the United States and be subject to immediate deportation.
