1080P Vs. 1080I Plasma

1080P Vs. 1080I Plasma thumbnail
1080p and 1080i have subtle, but in some cases, significant differences.

1080p and 1080i are interchangeable to most HDTV purchasers and viewers. The difference is the way in which high-definition images are received, a difference which most consumers will never have occasion to notice.

  1. 1080p

    • The 1080 of 1080p stands for the amount of pixels that cover the screen (1920 left to right and 1080 top to bottom). The "p" stands for progressive, which means that the lines on the screen that make up the picture displays from top to bottom.

    1080i

    • The "i" in 1080i stands for interlaced. This term refers to the way in which the images are sent to the TV. Interlaced transmission means the odd line information that makes up the picture appears first, and the even line information appears a split second later. This process occurs in fractions of a second, and is not noticeable to the viewer.

    Considerations

    • The difference between 1080i and 1080p is in the amount of frames per second each is capable of receiving and displaying on screen. Being that the process is so instantaneous, most TV viewers will never know the difference between the two. It is only when very advanced video games are brought into the mix that such rapid transfer times might ever matter. Informed consumers may lean towards 1080i as it tends to be the cheaper option, and it happens to be the format in which all current HD channels are broadcast.
