The Best Soil for Pine Trees in Containers

Pine trees can be grown in containers.

Soil used to grow a small pine tree in a container must give the tree what it needs to grow, including nutrients. Once you've chosen the best soil for your container, you'll need to water the pine tree on a regular basis, sometimes daily during the summer.

Requirements

Container trees require soil that contains the nutrients the tree needs to grow and thrive. The soil should also retain water but never become waterlogged. Soil that does not get compacted is also a plus when choosing the best soil.

Type

Using soil that comes directly from your yard or garden does not work well in a container. Instead, the best soil for pine trees consists of a soil-based compost that contains plenty of organic matter. The soil should also contain perlite or pumice to give the soil porosity, important in keeping air in the soil.

Fertilizer

To help the soil do its job in feeding the tree the nutrients it requires, you'll need to fertilize the tree regularly. Using a slow-release, balanced fertilizer works best with pine trees.
