Water Backflow Testing

Water backflow testing is a system designed to ensure the safety and purity of water. When water pressure is low, water can flow back into its original system. Backflow testing keeps the water flow process under control.

  1. Prevention

    • Water backflow testing is a prevention method that indicates whether or not the risk of water backflow exists. If backflow can be prevented, then the water that filters into public water sources or pools will be free of contamination.

    Function

    • Water systems are designed for water to flow in unidirectional streams. Water pressure aids this process by keeping the stream flowing. When water pressure weakens it no longer is as effective in keeping the water flowing forward. Therefore, water can potentially change direction and go back and contaminate the drinking system.

    Testing

    • Backflow valves are what prevent water from flowing backwards. Testing the valves involves checking for high or low pressure through the use of a gauge that is inserted into the valve. A tight pressure gauge is indicative of a good backflow valve, but a loose valve means that backflow is a risk.

    Significance

    • Cross-connection is when backflow water mixes into households' drinking water. This becomes a public health risk that backflow testing can help avoid, according to American Backflow Prevention Association.
