Safety Standards for Automotive Lifts

Automotive lifts, which elevate cars in garages, cause thousands of injuries in the United States each year, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Safe operation standards are key to avoiding injuries from automotive lifts.

Before Using

An important aspect of lift safety is to do a pre-use safety inspection to make sure the lift is up to standard. Any rust or damage to the lift is a sign the lift needs repairs or further inspection before use. Place a "Do Not Use" sign on the lift.

While Operating

While using the lift, safety standards should be followed. Wear gloves and goggles when operating an automotive lift. Do not lift a load heavier than the maximum recommended load weight. Do not lift a vehicle with people inside the vehicle.

Certification

The Automotive Lift Institute tests automotive lifts, and allows sellers to place a sticker of safety certification on lifts the institute deems safe. These tests are part of a certification program with standards for safety.
