Can Precompiled Setup Information Files Be Deleted in Windows? thumbnail
Precompiled setup information files can be deleted in Windows.

Operating systems rely on a variety of system files to run properly. Microsoft Windows is no exception. While Windows does protect certain files from accidental deletion, any file, including precompiled setup information files, can be deleted by the user.

  1. Deleting a File

    • For most files, including system files, users can delete files by right-clicking on the file and selecting "Delete." This will move the file to the "Recycle Bin" on your desktop. Emptying the Recycle Bin (right-click, then click "Empty") will delete the file.

    Protected Files

    • If a file is integral to the Windows system running properly, then the operating system will not allow you to delete that file normally while Windows is running.

    Startup Disk

    • You can delete files being protected by the Windows operating system by booting your computer from a Windows 7 system disc. When the disc's menu loads, click on "Command Prompt". When the command line comes up, type "cd" followed by the directory containing the file you want to delete, then press "Enter." Type "del" followed by the name of the file to delete. Press "Enter" to delete the file.
