Trackhoe Safety

Trackhoe Safety thumbnail
Track hoes are commonly used for large excavation projects.

Track hoes, also known as excavators, clear sites, load dirt or other material into trucks, dig trenches and more. With their large size, they pose a risk to the operator and other workers on site and should be operated with safety as the number one priority.

  1. Safety Classes

    • Various safety classes exist for heavy machinery operation. Employers or state agencies host the classes throughout the year and offer hands-on lessons and certification.

    Operation

    • Operators must wear seat belts and should have a clear understanding of where other workers or machinery are located at all times. Watch for any tipping hazards and utilize the counterweight. Use caution when towing and moving the boom.

    Injury Prevention

    • Avoid any maintenance procedures while the track hoe is running. Keep hands and feet clear of moving parts. Use caution when changing or draining fluids. Wear protective equipment such as gloves and safety glasses.

    Fire or Explosion

    • Do not smoke around the track hoe. Maintain the battery and other electrical components. Do not store flammable items such as dirty rags, fuel cans or lubricants on the machine.

    Miscellaneous

    • Read the operator manual. Never mount or dismount the machine while in motion. Never jump off the excavator. Always park the track hoe on level ground.
