Elephant Tree Care

Also known as copal or torote Colorado, the elephant tree (Bursera microphylla) is a low-growing, aromatic tree that grows to be about 10 feet tall. The tree may be grown in warm, dry climates with a little care.

Hardiness

A native of the American Southwest, as well as Mexico, elephant tree is a warm weather lover that may be grown in USDA zones 9 and 10. Grow elephant tree in a full-sun location.

Soil

Elephant tree grows naturally on the rocky, dry slopes of desert mountains. Grow the tree in a well draining rocky or sandy soil. The tree requires little supplemental watering once established.

Problems

Elephant tree must be grown in a sunny, warm environment to truly thrive. Trees grown in low temperatures will lose their aromatic ornamental leaves. The tree may also lose its leaves if not watered during a long dry spell.
