What Role Does an Aide Have in the Classroom?
A teacher's aide is a valuable part of the school classroom. Providing the teacher and the student with assistance, the teacher's aide offers support in several ways. With the support and guidance of the teacher's aide the classroom runs much more smoothly.

Academic Setting

While in the classroom, a teacher's aide is responsible for assisting with clerical and academic teaching. The aide has many duties, such as helping the children with their lesson plans, reading to the children, preparing the room with the equipment for a future project, checking the children's finished schoolwork, ordering necessary supplies, as well as other duties that the teacher deems necessary. By assisting the teacher, the teacher's aide allows the teacher time to prepare for future classroom instruction.
Nonacademic Setting

In the nonacademic school setting, the teacher's aide may have different types of duties, which include monitoring the lunchroom or the playground activities. The teacher's aide may be present on field trips to supervise the children as well.

Special Needs

Teacher's assistants may also work with special needs children. They generally are responsible for working one-on-one in this situation. Children with physical disabilities may need help with feeding or grooming. Some children who are learning English as a new language may need the teacher's aide to assist with communication due to their language barrier difficulties. Children with mental or emotional disabilities also require the special care of a teacher's aide.
