ISO Standards of Maintenance

ISO Standards of Maintenance thumbnail
If your maintenance doesn't follow proper rules, your company cannot meet ISO standards.

Meeting any International Standards Organization (ISO) standards is voluntary. According to the "Handbook of Maintenance Management," by Joel Levitt, the ISO 9000 standards do not directly cover maintenance activities. However, meeting ISO standards can affect maintenance practices.

  1. ISO 9000 Standards

    • Levitt defines ISO 9001 as the standard for facilities that design, develop, produce, install and service products for customers, including maintenance to prevent breakdown or failure. According to "Maintenance Management and Regulatory Compliance Strategies" by Terry Wireman, ISO 9002 standards are used for production and installation, while ISO 9003 standards regulate testing and inspection. ISO 9004 standards apply to quality management systems.

    ISO 9000 Requirements

    • According to Wireman, ISO 9000 certification requires having controlled and manned maintenance stores for replacement parts and tools. ISO standards require proper calibration of equipment and instruments; this can necessitate preventative maintenance programs to maintain calibration. ISO 9000 standards require documenting all maintenance performed on equipment.

    ISO 14000 Standards

    • Joel Levitt also writes that the primary impact of the ISO 14000 environmental standards are the chemicals used by maintenance staff. This includes what chemicals are used and cleanup methods.
