John and Stephanie Mihalczo founded SFDS on July 4, 1992. John Mihalczo had previously managed other driving schools. SFDS began as a small, single-car operation. As of 2010, John and Stephanie Mihalczo are also members of the Driving School Association of New Jersey's board of directors.
