Paid medical transcription training can lead to a career producing reports from a doctor's dictated notes about patients' visits and various test performed. The recorded notes will be transcribed to become computerized patient files.

  1. Courses

    • Medical transcription requires a high school diploma or equivalent, plus good keyboarding skills and an excellent command of spelling, punctuation and grammar. Upon enrollment, students receive special software, headphones and sample audio tapes. Students also receive training in medical terminology and human anatomy. They must also learn how to format the reports correctly, and how to keep confidential patient records securely.

    Duration

    • Training can be completed from four months to a year depending on how quickly the candidates can complete and pass each module.

    Equipment

    • Students need a computer, keyboard, mouse, headset and special software for listening to the recordings made by medical personnel. They also need a computer medical dictionary/spellchecker.

    Location

    • Many local community colleges and online institutions offer medical transcription training.

    Cost

    • The cost of training depends upon the length, location and materials provided, but starts at around $1,200 (as of 2010).

    Certification

    • Once the course is completed, candidates receive a certificate from their learning institution. If they wish, they can become a registered medical transcriptionist (RMT) by taking the exam set by the Approval Committee for Certificate Programs (ACCP).
