The state of New York imposes exterior lighting codes and laws that are enforced by local city and county governments. If exterior lights are found to not meet these codes they can be removed and the owner of the property can receive a fine until the light is properly installed and inspected.

  1. Energy Conservation Code

    • All exterior lighting in New York must comply with the state Energy Conservation Code. This code requires that lighting meet minimum energy intake requirements for outdoor use. Approved low energy consumption light bulbs, such as halogen lights, must be used.

    Inspection

    • All new exterior lighting must be inspected by local government officials for code compliance. The city or county may require the owner of the property to pay a fee for the inspection service. Check with your local building inspector's office for further details.

    Permits

    • The owner must file for correct construction permits with local government and have the exterior lighting plan approved before beginning installation. New exterior lighting installation on a historic building may also require approval from the local preservation society before construction begins.
