Truss Construction Safety
The Occupational Safety and Health Division of Oregon, OR-OSHA, determines the regulations for setting and bracing wood trusses and fall protection in construction workplaces. Truss construction workers should familiarize themselves with the safety specifications of safety nets, guardrails and other safety procedures.
-
Guardrails
-
Install guardrails when the scaffold platform is 10 feet or more above the floor or ground. Guardrail systems should be able to withstand a force of at least 200 pounds without failing.
Safety Nets
-
Install safety nets as close as possible no more than 30 feet below the work area. The safety net drop test should be able to sustain a 400-pound sandbag. Inspect safety nets no less than once a week for damage, holes and wear.
-
Positioning
-
Sustain three points of contact while walking in the trusses by keeping both hands and one foot or both feet and one hand touching truss members at all times. Sufficiently brace trusses and rafters before standing on or using them for support. Work from secure positions by fastening one leg around a truss member while working in peaks, webs or on the top of beams.
Training
-
All employees subject to fall hazards must complete a training program. The program should include the correct procedure for handling materials, the use and function of guardrail systems, safety nets and restraint systems. Retraining may be necessary for some employees.
