What Is the Overall Function of a Human Body Organ System?

The human body organ system consists of an interconnected network of all the organs of the body working together to keep the body functioning optimally. The skin is the largest organ of your body.

  1. Features

    • The smallest unit of an organ is a cell. Cells come together to form tissues. Tissues make up organs. Your body's organ system is made up of the body's organs.

    Function

    • Each organ has a specific function it is designed to fulfill. For example, your heart is designed to pump blood throughout the body. Your skin's function is to provide a protective covering. The lungs release carbon dioxide and bring oxygen to our bodies. When all these activities run smoothly, your body is said to be in a state of homeostasis or balance.

    Homeostasis

    • Within the human body, if homeostasis is interrupted by disease, your organ system will react to compensate for your body function imbalance. For example, when plaque, a white, fatty substance, begins to clog the blood vessels, the heart will have a harder time pumping blood through the body. To keep body blood flow sufficient, the heart increases in size and contracts harder, increasing blood pressure. High blood pressure can damage kidneys, another unit of the body's organ system.
