Definition of Drive Strength

The hard drive may be the largest source of drive strength for a computer.

Drive strength is one of many factors that allows a computer to perform at optimal levels. Several factors determine drive strength including speed, available space and overall capacity.

Speed

The speed of a computer refers to the maximum processing speed. This indicates, at optimal levels, how fast a process or program can run on the computer. The faster the processor can work, the more drive strength the computer will have because it will be able to interpret information more quickly.

Available Space

Available space is the clean, unused space on the computer's hard drive. The more available space a computer has, the more processes it is able to run simultaneously at a high rate, allowing for a higher rate of disk strength.

Capacity

Drives with higher memory capacity or availability can run at a higher rate, achieving more disk strength and allowing the computer to function more efficiently. As the computer's hard drive memory space fills, it loses disk strength and the computer may begin to run slower or take longer to complete a task.
