The Natural Way to Kill Ants in the House

You can use chemical insecticides to kill ants, but you will be killing yourself a little too. Chemicals and freon in spray cans of insecticides damage the environment and contribute to depletion of the ozone layer.     • Home remedies are a convenient method for attempting to control household insects, but unfortunately most rarely work. Studies reported by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln debunk many theories that mint oil, vinegar and lemon juice repel or kill ants or other insects.

    • However, some old wives' tales and home remedies do work to kill and repel ants and other insects. Perhaps the most successful natural remedy involves using boric acid, a compound of the element boron, combined with a syrup of sugar and water. Boric acid mixtures work to kill ants by slowly poisoning the worker ants who carry the bait back to their colonies who eventually feed on the bait as well.

    • Some homeowners have luck using home remedies to repel ants. Since home remedies are free, because you already have the products, it never hurts to try sprinkling cinnamon or laying bay leaves in front of common ant entrances to help repel ants or other insects.
